IJCNN2008 – Special Session on “Neural Modeling Fields and Dynamic Logic” Organizers (provisional, order may change): Leonid Perlovsky (Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; leonid@seas.harvard.edu; Leader of the NNTC Task Force on “The Mind and Brain”), Daniel S. Levine (Univ. Texas, Arlington, TX; levine@uta.edu), Wlodek Duch (Nicolaus Copernicus University, Torun, Poland, duch@phys.uni.torun.pl). Scope of Special Session: Neural network technology has been inspired by knowledge of functioning of the mind and brain. Currently, in part due to our success, a significant amount of neural network research is devoted to development of various applications based on simplified neural paradigms, which represent only a small aspect of our knowledge about the mind and brain. This special session provides a forum for the presentation of the latest data, models, results, and future research directions in studying the mind and brain and developing applications based on discovered mechanisms. The special session invites submissions in any of the following areas:
Short Bios Dr. Leonid Perlovsky is Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, Principal Research Physicist and Technical Advisor at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Hanscom AFB. He is Program Manager for DOD Semantic Web program, leads projects on neural network applications, including SBIRs, and advises NRC Research Associateship scholarships for young and senior researchers. From 1985 to 1999, he served as Chief Scientist at Nichols Research, a $0.5B high-tech DOD contractor leading the corporate research in neural networks, sensor fusion, and target recognition for all DOD branches. He served as professor at Novosibirsk University and New York University, and participated as a principal in commercial startups developing tools for text understanding, biotechnology, and financial predictions. His company predicted the market crash following 9/11 a week before the event, detecting activities of Al Qaeda traders, and later helped SEC looking for these guys. He is interviewed on radio and TV on NN research, invited for keynote plenary talks and tutorial lectures worldwide, published more then 280 papers, 10 book chapters, authored a monograph “Neural Networks and Intellect,” Oxford University Press, 2000 (currently in the 3rd printing), and two books with Springer in 2007. Dr. Perlovsky participates in organizing conferences on Neural Networks, including Program Chair for CIMSA’05,’06,‘07, General Chair for KIMAS’03’05’07 served on organizing committees for IJCNN 2006, 2007; Chairs IEEE Boston Computational Intelligence Chapter and leads IEEE Neural Network Task Force on The Mind and Brain. He serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Editor-at-Large for “Natural Computations,” and Editor-in-Chief for “Physics of Life Reviews.” He received several awards including the IEEE Distinguished Member of Boston Section Award 2005; the US AFRL Charles Ryan Memorial Award for Basic Research, 2007; International Neural Network Society Gabor Award for achievement in engineering/applications, 2007; and James McLucas Award for basic research, 2007 (the highest US Air Force scientific award).
